Updating a contact via Zapier

Automatically update a contact in TidyHQ with information from external sources using Zapier, without creating duplicate contacts

Updated over a week ago

By searching for your contact before attempting an update, you ensure that you're modifying the existing information rather than creating a new entry.

We're here to guide you through the process of updating a contact in TidyHQ using Zapier, to make sure duplicate contacts are not created. Let's dive in!

Why Use a Search Operation First? 🕵️‍♂️

Imagine you're trying to update your friend's contact information in your TidyHQ workspace. You could just add a new contact with the updated info, but if your friend is already in there, you'll end up with duplicates. That's where the magic of using a search operation first comes in!

By searching for your contact before attempting an update, you ensure that you're modifying the existing information rather than creating a new entry.

Step-by-Step Guide to Update a Contact Using Zapier 🧙‍♂️✨

Step 1: Choose Your Trigger

  • Log in to Zapier and click on the Create Zap button.

For your Trigger, select the app and event that initiates the contact update. This could be a form submission, a new email subscriber, or any event where contact information comes your way.

Step 2: Set Up a Search Action in TidyHQ

  • After setting your trigger, it's time to add an Action. Choose TidyHQ as your action app.

  • Select the Find Contact action.

  • Connect your TidyHQ account if you haven't already.

  • Set up your search. Typically, you'll search by email since it's a unique identifier. Fill in the fields necessary to locate your contact's existing record.

Tip: If the contact can't be found, you can tell Zapier to create a new one right within the same action. Look for the option "Create TidyHQ Contact if it doesn't exist yet" when setting up your action.

Step 3: Update the Contact

  • After the Find Contact action, add another Action.

  • This time, choose the Update Contact action for TidyHQ.

  • Here's the key part: in the setup, you will be asked to specify which contact to update. Use the Tidy-Assigned Identifier for Contact from the previous search result as the identifier for the update. This makes sure you're updating the correct contact.

Step 4: Test and Activate Your Zap

  • Do a test run of your Zap to ensure it's finding the right contact and updating it without creating duplicates.

  • Once you're happy with the setup, turn your Zap on. Voilà! You're all set to update contacts automatically from other apps.

Note: Zaps with more than two steps, or using a filter, require a paid Zapier subscription (separate to your TidyHQ subscription).
